Cat Power announces new covers album, shares rendition of Frank Ocean’s Bad Religion

The aptly titled Covers releases on January 14th.

Singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, renowned for her work as Cat Power, has announced her return with the release of a new covers album.

Aptly entitled Covers, the album is set for release on January 14th and marks Marshall’s third full-length project of covers within a broad and accomplished discography that spans over two decades.

Led by a reinterpretation of the venerated and enigmatic Frank Ocean‘s ‘Bad Religion’, Marshall explains in a statement that she first began interpolating the R&B luminary’s lyrics within performances of her own song ‘In Your Face’ during a 2018 touring cycle.

“That song was bringing me down. So I started pulling out lyrics from ‘Bad Religion’ and singing those instead of getting super depressed. Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.”

Renditions of songs by Ryan Gosling, Lana Del Rey, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and more round out the album’s track listing.

An intense and simmering guitar-led take that retains the haunting essence of Ocean’s original, hear ‘Bad Religion’ below.
