Shabaka Hutchings announces new solo EP featuring Armand Hammer, Esperanza Spalding and more

Possession arrives in December.

Shabaka Hutchings has announced the release of a new EP.

The famed London composer, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader’s Possession is scheduled for arrival in December and will mark his third release to materialise since embarking on a newfound solo career following the disbandment of long-running ensembles The Ancestors, The Comet Is Coming and Sons Of Kemet. The successor to 2024’s critically acclaimed debut solo album Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge It’s Grace comprises six songs and is bolstered by contributions from a slew of notable collaborators including Armand Hammer’s billy woods and ELUCID, Esperanza Spalding, Jason Moran, Surya Botofasina and Carlos Niño among others.

Of the project’s newly debuted opening statement ‘Timepieces’ Shabaka shares

My original plan for my album ‘Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace’ was to present the acoustic music as recorded in the Van Gelder and London studios, but also dissect and sample the material to produce an accompanying beats segment to the album. ‘Timepieces’ is one of the results of this intention.”
