Squid announce third album, share lead single

The Bristol art rock troupe’s Cowards will arrive in February.

Squid have announced the release of a new album.

Cowards is scheduled for arrival through longtime label Warp in February and will mark the Bristol art rock outfit’s third full-length album in succession of 2021’s Bright Green Field and 2023’s O Monolith. Recorded at North London’s Church Studios, the looming project is said to tackle lyrical themes of evil and draws upon the support of an eclectic roster of collaborators including Clarissa Connelly, Tony Njoku, Pozi’s Rosa Brook and The Ruisi Quartet. Production duties throughout the album’s sessions were helmed by Marta Salogni, Grace Banks and longtime collaborator Dan Carey with mixing subsequently overseen by American abstract rock luminary John McEntire of Bastro, Gastr del Sol, Tortoise and The Sea And Cake notoriety.

Vocalist-drummer Ollie Judge explains of the album’s newly debuted lead single ‘Crispy Skin’,

“‘Crispy Skin’ was lyrically inspired by a dystopian novel Tender Is The Flesh I read where cannibalism becomes the societal norm and humans are manufactured and sold in supermarkets. I think when most people read books like these they picture themselves as the sort of person that would take the moral high-ground within these narratives. The track was written about how the reality of having a moral-compass in these stories of desperation and horror would be extremely difficult.”
