The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis team for collaborative album

The pairing’s eponymous The Messthetics And James Brandon Lewis arrives in March.

The Messthetics and New York tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis have announced the release of a collaborative album.

Making their full-length studio debut through historic jazz imprint Impulse! Records in March, the pairing of composer-bandleader Lewis and Fugazi offshoot jazz-punk trio Anthony Pirog, Joe Lally and Brendan Canty first convened publicly two years ago and have since sustained their collaboration over a series of live performances, most recently appearing at this year’s NYC Winter Jazzfest.

Newly premiered single ‘Emergence’ leads the forthcoming album’s announcement and brandishes huge promise, with Lewis’ unhinged saxophone inflections matched by a formidable groove that could only be conjured by a band bearing the wide-ranging and venerable credentials of Pirog, Lally and Canty.

Lewis summarises of his collaborative relationship with the band

“The way I revere them is the same way that I revere playing with Jamaaladeen Tacuma or playing with William Parker… It’s a certain road experience that you can’t get in school.”
