Thandi Ntuli teams with Carlos Niño for new album

The Johannesburg pianist’s Rainbow Revisited arrives in November through International Anthem.

South African jazz composer, pianist and vocalist Thandi Ntuli has announced the release of a new album.

Scheduled for release on November 17th through International Anthem, Rainbow Revisited was created in collaboration with Los Angeles producer Carlos Niño and marks the Johannesburg-based instrumentalist’s third full-length album to date. Stemming from initial talks of collaboration that began in 2017, the international pairing’s creative intent was realised two years later over a series of recording sessions that took place in the midst of Ntuli’s visit to the USA for a live performance organised by Jason Sugars and Kali of The Nonsemble. The resultant body of work cultivated from their studio sessions finds Ntuli’s established jazz piano and vocal stylings remain at the fore, intermittently coloured by a tasteful curation of new age synthesis and Niño’s shimmering, Thembi-esque percussive embellishments. Artwork for the forthcoming album was provided by venerated London-based multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings of The Comet Is Coming, Shabaka And The Ancestors, Sons Of Kemet and solo fame.

Leading the announcement of Rainbow Revisited, first single ‘Nomayoyo (Ingoma ka Mkhulu)’ is a spellbinding rendition of a meditative, mantra-like composition originally written by Ntuli’s grandfather.
