The pair take to LA’s Hollywood Bowl with a slew of guest performers in September.
In 2021 Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and The London Symphony Orchestra joined forces for the release of a collaborative album that would prove to be a landmark of the year’s musical landscape.
A sprawling and meditative suite of nine movements, Promises marked Sanders’ first release in over a decade and ultimately became the late jazz innovator’s final artistic statement before passing away the following year.
Now Floating Points’ Sam Shepherd has revealed plans to perform the album live in full for one time only. Taking place in September from the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the concert will draw upon the talents of prolific London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings of Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming fame, Four Tet, Caribou, the Los Angeles Studio Orchestra and more.
Shepherd explains,
“In the weeks before his passing, Pharoah and I talked about doing a single live performance of Promises, together with a large orchestra. While working on the album together, he would always ask with such fondness after our friend Shabaka – someone he’d seen play several times and greatly admired – “He plays big and strong like a lion!”. So, with the help of some of our friends, we’re going to perform the work on 20th September this year at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. We really hope you can join us.”
Tickets for the concert will be available from May 2nd with Hollywood Bowl members benefitting from early access. Sign up for ticket access here.
