London jazz collective KOKOROKO have announced the release of their long-awaited debut album.
Could We Be More is set for arrival on August 5th through Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings and signals the culmination of a four-year build in momentum that began with ‘Abusey Junction’, a standout feature on the Shabaka Hutchings-curated compilation album We Out Here that left its wistful, meditative hues lingering within the minds of all whose path it crossed long after the song’s resolve.
Leading the announcement of their debut album, new single ‘We Give Thanks’ deftly reaffirms the crux of KOKOROKO’s sound; an ability to filter longstanding West African and Caribbean musical traditions through a contemporary lens for intoxicating results that balance nostalgia and forward-thinking ingenuity to a degree paralleled by few.
Of ‘We Give Thanks’ the group elaborate
“We were imagining playing live with this one — it’s definitely written with that energy we get towards the end of a set. Some shows, like La Cigalle in Paris or Paradiso in Dam have legit felt magical for us and you always want to give that energy back. This is us trying to do that.”
