Paul McCartney confirms the looming release of new album McCartney III

The third instalment in the storied songwriter’s eponymously titled trilogy arrives on December 11th.

Legendary British songwriter Paul McCartney has confirmed the release of his third eponymously titled solo album.

A follow-up to the former Beatle’s 1970 self-titled solo debut and his revered 1980 avant-garde exploration McCartney II, McCartney III is slated for release on December 11th and similarly to its predecessors, is a homespun affair that was composed and recorded in solitude.

McCartney notes that the forthcoming album was crafted at his Sussex home this year in the midst of time spent in reclusion during the UK’s national lockdown and following the cancellation of a European tour that was expected to conclude at Somerset’s Glastonbury Festival.

Elaborating on the creation of McCartney III the musician explains,

“I was living lockdown life on my farm with my family and I would go to my studio every day. I had to do a little bit of work on some film music and that turned into the opening track and then when it was done I thought what will I do next? I had some stuff I’d worked on over the years but sometimes time would run out and it would be left half-finished so I started thinking about what I had. Each day I’d start recording with the instrument I wrote the song on and then gradually layer it all up, it was a lot of fun. It was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job. So, I just did stuff I fancied doing. I had no idea this would end up as an album.”

McCartney III releases on December 11th via Capitol Records. A wealth of vinyl configurations including red, white, blue, green, pink and yellow variants will be pressed via Jack White’s Third Man Pressing and available through specified vendors. Pre-orders of the album’s blue vinyl pressing are available in the UK exclusively via HMV now.
