Aphex Twin teams with Novation for new AFX Station synthesizer

The device marks a new iteration of the instrument manufacturer’s Bass Station II.

Novation and Aphex Twin have announced the release of a new hardware synthesizer named the AFX Station.

News of the instrument arrives after cryptic billboard advertisements adorned with the reclusive musician’s iconic logo began to appear in London, Bristol, Los Angeles and Berlin during previous weeks, initiating speculation amongst fans.

The AFX Station is a limited-edition version of Novation’s popular Bass Station II mono synthesizer, with the new iteration featuring an integrated ‘AFX Mode’ that was previously introduced to units as a firmware update in 2019. The feature, which was designed with the help of Richard D. James assigns individual parameters to each note of the unit, allowing the user to play a different patch on every key. The AFX Station also features 128 new synth patches and several aesthetic modifications to the casing such as purple highlights and Aphex Twin’s ‘A’ insignia displayed on the rear panel.
