The performances preceded South London MC Dave’s win for his debut album Psychodrama.
This week saw the 2019 award ceremony for the Hyundai Mercury Prize take place with its twelve shortlisted nominees performing live ahead of the announcement of the prestigious event’s album of the year.
Among those nominated in 2019 were Northampton rapper Slowthai for his politically charged debut album Nothing Great About Britain, virtuosic London jazz collective SEED Ensemble, Brit School students Black Midi, math-turned-stadium rock quartet Foals, rapper and multi-instrumentalist Little Simz and South London MC Dave, who ultimately won the prize for his debut album Psychodrama.
Revealing the album of the year, DJ Annie Mac of the 2019 judging panel described Dave’s Psychodrama as showing ‘remarkable levels of musicianship, true artistry, courage, honesty.’ The win arrives shortly after his recent appearance alongside fellow nominee Little Simz in the revival of British crime drama series Top Boy.
