Following a series of teasers that were recently rolled out by Brooklyn label Captured Tracks, DIIV have officially announced the release of their long-awaited third album.
Entitled Deceiver, the New York City band’s third full-length body of work was tracked and recorded in LA in March 2019 with a refined lineup of Zachary Cole Smith, Andrew Bailey (guitar), Colin Caulfield (bass), and Ben Newman (drums). A press release notes the album to delve deeper in to the psyche of frontman Zachary Cole Smith than the band have previously ventured.
A precursor to the project’s full release, ‘Skin Game’ provides a glaring insight in to Smith’s own experiences with addiction and the broader questions that surround the disease, communicated through hypnotic vocals, earworm guitar motifs and a newly elevated quality of production attributed to the enlisted help of Sonny Diperri whose credits include albums from My Bloody Valentine and Nine Inch Nails.
Discussing the themes of the album, Smith says
“It’s an imaginary dialogue between two characters, which could either be myself or people I know. I spent six months in several different rehab facilities at the beginning of 2017.
I was living with other addicts. Being a recovering addict myself, there are a lot of questions like, ‘Who are we? What is this disease?’ Our last record was about recovery in general, but I truthfully didn’t buy in. I decided to live in my disease instead.
‘Skin Game’ looks at where the pain comes from. I’m looking at the personal, physical, emotional, and broader political experiences feeding into the cycle of addiction for millions of us.”

Deceiver releases on October 4th via Captured Tracks. Pre-order the album on limited tricolour vinyl and view the full tracklist here.
