Ryuichi Sakamoto‘s Coda documentary which released publicly in theatres earlier this year will now be available to stream via on-demand video subscription service MUBI.
The film – created by Stephen Nomura Schible over the course of five years and originally premiered at the 2017 iteration of Venice International Film Festival – looks at the life and legacy of the admired Japanese film composer and founding Yellow Magic Orchestra member.
Throughout Coda glimpses of Sakamoto obtaining field recordings and demonstrating in opposition to the use of nuclear power convey the environmental activist’s love for nature, whilst anecdotes in reference to working experiences gained amidst the formation of some of Sakamoto’s finest compositions paint a greater picture of the revered artist’s creative processes.
The footage also coincides with and documents a period of introspection in Sakamoto’s life as he recovered from a bout of stage three throat cancer that was diagnosed in 2014 and consequently led to the musician’s work rate coming to a near-standstill.
