Mac DeMarco has shared a cover of ‘Honey Moon’ by Japanese musical luminary Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra.

‘Honey Moon’ originally appeared on Hosono’s second solo effort Tropical Dandy, whilst Mac’s interpretation will release on 7″ vinyl via Light In The Attic. The Seattle-based label are currently gearing up to curate a new series of releases “featuring some of our favorite contemporary artists covering their favorite songs”, of which DeMarco’s recording constitutes the first instalment. The label are also currently amid a reissue campaign that sees five of Hosono’s most lauded solo releases pressed to vinyl for the first time outside his native Japan. The albums included in said campaign are Cochin Moon (1978), Hosono House (1973), Paraiso (1978), Philharmony (1982) and Omni Sight Seeing (1989).

Discussing his relationship with Haruomi Hosono and Yellow Magic Orchestra, DeMarco shared the following short but sweet sentiment,

“Hosono has been the main reason I’ve continued making music since I was like 19.”

Haruomi Hosono began his musical career as the bassist of psychedelic rock band Apryl Fool and shortly thereafter of folk rock band Happy End, before becoming a calling card producer for starlets of the burgeoning city pop movement such as Akina Nakamori, Chiemi Manabe, Taeko Ohnuki and Mariya Takeuchi. However it was Hosono’s career with the innovative Yellow Magic Orchestra alongside Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi that cemented his indelible legacy as a Japanese icon.

Honey Moon releases on January 11th via Light In The Attic.
