Watch Ravyn Lenae’s music video for Sticky

From the forthcoming Crush EP, produced entirely by Steve Lacy of The Internet.

Singer-songwriter Ravyn Lenae was a tool in the arsenal of fellow Chicagoans Noname and Mick Jenkins in 2016 before coming in to her own throughout the following year with the release of her Midnight Moonlight EP and a support slot on SZA’s CTRL tour.

Her newest EP Crush is set to release in two days and features production throughout from Steve Lacy of The Internet. The first glimpse, ‘Sticky’ was revealed in December and indicated that a large dynamic shift was to come with the forthcoming release.

In ‘Sticky’, Lenae’s poised falsetto glides seamlessly over a hard-hitting and funky rhythm section, guitar chords that wrestle between falling on and off the beat, a modulated organ and layered vocal harmonies that have become a defining quality of Lacy’s own P-funk influenced sound. The cover art for Crush pays homage to the late R&B musician Aaliyah who Lacy additionally referenced in an interview with Beats 1 where he discussed the EP. The nod could perhaps be an implication that Lenae and Lacy’s collaboration will extend further than one release, similarly to the working relationship of Aaliyah and Timberland. We can only keep our fingers crossed.

Of the EP, Lacy said

“It’s entirely produced by me, the first thing that I’m entirely producing. When I got the opportunity I looked at it as like – yes, this is my Pharrell/Kelis, my Timberland/Aaliyah, my J*Davey moment. I had to take it.”
