Mark E. Smith of The Fall has passed away aged 60

The iconic post-punk musician passed away at his home this morning.

Mark E. Smith, the founder and abrasive frontman of The Fall has died aged 60. Though no cause of death has been given, the band were forced to cancel a handful of scheduled appearances last year due to Smith’s ongoing health issues that culminated in his hospitalisation.

The Fall’s manager, Pam Van Damned issued a formal statement via the band’s Facebook page earlier today to confirm the news.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith. He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”

Smith enjoyed an incredibly prolific career in music, producing close to an album a year since The Fall’s debut and a total of 32 full length releases with the band during his life. Known for his unrestrained vocal delivery and sharp, literary inspired lyricism, he influenced many generations.
