With the release of their debut LP – courtesy of psych stalwarts Heavenly Recordings with whom the band signed to in the final months of 2016 – quickly approaching, Halifax-based trio The Orielles have shared a new single.
‘Blue Suitcase (Disco Wrist)’ is the closing track from their aforementioned debut and shows a continuity in the band’s recent diversification, or progression if you will, that began with a single track. ‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt’ clocked in at a staggering 8 minutes and 30 seconds in length, was almost linear in its structure and shedded most of the surf rock tendencies that had been defining qualities of the band’s early work.

In ‘Blue Suitcase (Disco Wrist)’ a thumping, ESG-inflected bassline and a 16th note groove lifted straight from Studio 54 lay the foundation for the song whilst guitars wrestle between Nile Rodger-isms and dizzying modulation effects. Meanwhile, encapsulating the track throughout is a hazy and stoned sensibility owed to Esme’s nonchalant vocal delivery, some strategically placed bongos and a feel that drifts on and off the beat.
Gone are the reverb soaked guitars and what remains is a band that are unafraid to let all of their influences bleed in to their work, producing an end product that is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and unique to come from the UK’s independent scene in its current iteration.
The Orielles are touring throughout February and April in support of Silver Dollar Moment, which includes a hometown show at Hebden Bridge Trades as part of Heavenly Recordings’ annual weekender.

Silver Dollar Moment releases on February 16th via Heavenly Recordings.
